Innovation: Sustainable products

PUR foam – The insulation material of the future

In today’s society, energy has become a scarce resource. Therefore, Bayer has worked on reducing the global CO2 emissions and protecting the climate for a long time. On the basis of our sustainability-program and strategy, we have been focusing on making our production more energy efficient in recent years. Furthermore, we continuously work on developing new products that help our customers save energy. Polybrick and P-elements are just two examples of Nordic products developed by Bayer MaterialScience.

Energy efficient building

Today, 40 % of the world’s energy consumption is used in buildings. We would like to change that. With two unique Nordic products, Bayer MaterialScience has proven that innovative energy efficient houses not only benefit the environment, but that these also are also easier and more affordable to build.

P-Elements: Thermal insulating bricks

In cooperation with the Norwegian company, Mjøsplast, Bayer MaterialScience in Otterup has developed a new unique solution for insulation that not only reduces energy consumption in houses, but also reduces construction costs and creates a larger living space. The invention is known as P-Elements. They are easy to work with, and have much better insulation properties than other building materials. A typical Norwegian house uses about 200 kWh/m2/year, while a passive house built with the P-Element system only uses 15-20 kWh/m2/year.

The “Passive Element” is a heat insulating construction element consisting of two laminate leafs and an insulating core made of polyurethane (PUR) foam. The elements are developed as a complete modular building system for homes, industrial buildings, schools etc. With small modest sized modules of only 30x25 cm, it is basically possible to meet all individual design needs. This flexibility reduces the time of construction as well as the total transport and construction costs.

Polybrick – revolutionary innovation

In Bayer MaterialScience’s Danish development center in Otterup, Funen, our researchers have created a new brick named Polybrick. This brick makes it possible to reduce the bricklayer to just 35 centimeters which increase the living space of a house, equivalent to an extra room. Furthermore, Polybrick insulates 40 % better than traditional insulation materials such as mineral wool and polystyrene, and it is easier and faster to use.

The new brick is an innovation based on our knowledge of construction technology. It combines bricks and polyurethane insulation in one energy and space-saving element. Inner and outer wall is gathered in one brick with insulation between them. It has the same weight as a single brick has today.

This is how easy the building process is, when you use the new brick, Polybrick. Both the inner and outer wall with insulation is built at the same time. The building block is easy to handle and it combines brick and polyurethane insulation in one energy and space saving element which furthermore combines three building processes in one.
